Weekend Update

Well, we pulled it off, despite the standard set of glitches that accompany opening weekend. The costumes were gorgeous - even the blue skirt I keep tripping over - the set is beautiful, the effects all worked well and right on cue. There were some brilliant things that showed up in the acting: Adam downing his second drink in Act II, making me literally wrestle the glass from his hand, spraying us both with the juice we use to simulate rum punch; the tone of utter betrayal in Annette's voice when she asks how he could have destroyed the book that had been her "child" too. There are so many more examples. Not being exactly educated in theater, I conceptualize it as the difference between "acting" and emoting - the intellectual versus the visceral. Somewhere under the lights, if the air is right, it becomes more real than simulated and the people you're onstage with are no longer your friends, but the people they're playing. Difficult to describe, very cool to experience. I should also mention how awesome it was that Ryan came all the way up from Kansas City to see me perform.
