The Fat Lady Ain't Sung Yet

Milbarge at Begging the Question explains why John Ashcroft's resignation speech was really quite disturbing:

"But I was very interested to know that, thanks to Ashcroft, our troubles are over: 'The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved.' . . .

OK, all sarcasm aside, I can't even imagine what Ashcroft was thinking when he wrote this -- and good luck blaming a speechwriter when it's handwritten. Does Ashcroft really think that all Americans are secure from crime and terror now? I can't read that statement to say anything else, but that's just patently insipid."
